TUFFease® Pressure Ulcer Prevention Gel Pad Products
Preventing pressure ulcers is the primary goal of Innovative Medical Products TUFFease line of gel products.
Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores and decubitus ulcers happen when the skin/tissue pressure, typically at a boney prominence, exceeds the capillary blood pressure and blood flow stops. After about two hours, tissue begins to die. When this is allowed to happen, the sore, sometimes presenting at the surface but more likely deep near the bone/tissue interface begins.
Preventing pressure sores by the utilization of cushioning gel products is accomplished by their unique ability to distribute pressure more like a liquid than a solid. When using typical padding, foam or other compressible materials, the pressure is concentrated at the point of maximum compression. When utilizing a non-compressible material, a liquid or gel, the pressure is distributed over the entire contact area as explained by Archimedes Principle and Pascal's Law.
In summary, pressure ulcer prevention should be at the top of everyone's list. It is preventable with minimal effort and some appropriate pressure reducing products. It is demanded by current insurance and Medicare programs. Conservatively it is 100 times more expensive to correct than prevent. And, it is inline with good patient care.
